Moinho da Felicidade (the Mill of Happiness) was built in 1991 using an existing Algarvian 19th c windmill. It is situated on high ground with spectacular views in all directions, including the Monchique mountains.
The nearest town is Algoz (5 mins drive) which is still virtually untouched by tourism and still typically Algarvian with its fruit, fish and meat market and various shops.
The town of Armacao da Pera (15 mins) is, by and large, a resort used by Portuguese with sea-front restaurants and a small prom, whereas Albufeira (25 mins) offers more English style restaurants and entertainment, including nightclubs. The nearest beach is also 15 mins and is spectacular and natural, backed by dunes, even by Portuguese standards.
