Portugal occupies most of the western end of the Iberian Peninsula. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the west and the south, which means that Portugal has a tremendous variety of coastline.

Portugal's proximity to the ocean has led to a fascination with sailing and travel in the Portugese people and at one time Portugal had an empire that spanned the globe.
